The River Cuckmere

From Heathfield to the sea, the Cuckmere’s modest beginnings in the Weald speak little of its grand finale. The last mile of its life is (or was) a meandering giant which captures the eye of many a motorist as they wind around Cuckmere Haven’s Downland slopes.
The best view, the one shown in this illustration, is from the Eastbourne side, rather than Seaford, as the relief is more pronounced and the viewpoints plentiful.
Visitors to this part of Sussex take with them one of the most striking river views of anywhere in the country. And in years to come the authorities plan to rejoin the meanders to the river flow, allowing the salt marsh to take hold again and encourage a unique and rare mix of animals and plants to flourish again.
